Claims them to be faster, energy efficient, more affordable and all those good things when they finally ship later this year.

Samsung has revealed that the company has begun mass producing 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch multi-level cell (MLC)-based solid state drives (SSD) in 64GB and 128GB capacity. The new SSDs will feature exceptionally low power consumption in standby mode at approximately 0.2 watts and in active mode at 0.5 watts.

Specs wise, the Samsung's MLC-based SSD lineup will sport read and write speeds of 90MB/s and 70MB/s respectively. Moreover, the new 128GB SSD will last approximately 20 times longer than the generally accepted 4-5 year life span of a notebook PC hard drive. Based on SATA 3.0GB/s interface, the 128GB MLC SSD model will consist of 64 MLC NAND flash memory chips of 16 gigabits each, optimized single-chip controller technology and advanced flash-management firmware technology. Enclosed in a brushed metallic casing, it measures 100mm x 69.8mm and is 9.5mm thick (industry-standard). So, it should go well with most modern laptops.

Samsung MLC SSD

Samsung first introduced their 64GB SSD last year, and has plans to begin producing a 256GB at the end of this year. For what it's worth, Samsung wants you to know that sales of SSD units will increase 800% between now and 2010.

We just hope Samsung takes a cue from OCZ'z Core series of SSDs and slap a relatively cheaper price tag slapped on these.
